Orbem Has Successfully Closed a 30 EUR Million Series A Funding Round
  • With its easily accessible AI innovation for scanning biological samples, the deep tech company Orbem aims to revolutionize the food, construction, and health industries, and has already successfully launched a solution that improves efficiency and fosters sustainability in the poultry industry — an area notorious for ethical concerns.
  • Genus, Orbem’s AI-powered MRI solution for the poultry industry, enables hatcheries to determine the sex of an egg in a completely contactless and non-invasive manner, delivering results in just one second per egg. To date, more than 21 million eggs have been scanned, and the company has already reached profitability.
  • Now, Orbem has successfully closed a Series A debt and equity funding round of 30 million EUR, led by 83North, with strong backing from La Famiglia, The Venture Collective, Possible Ventures, and some of Germany’s most prominent entrepreneurs.

Deep technology firm Orbem has raised 30 million EUR in its Series A funding round. The investment, led by global venture capital firm 83North, positions Orbem at the forefront of harnessing AI to industrialize MRI technology, making it more accessible, most sustainable, and efficient. New investor La Famiglia and existing investors The Venture Collective, Possible Ventures, and Dr. Rüdiger Schmidt also backed the round. Additionally, among Orbem’s investors are some of Germany’s most prominent entrepreneurs, including Personio co-founders Hanno Renner, Roman Schumacher and Chief Operating Officer Jonas Rieke, former Zalando CEO Rubin Ritter, Forto co-founders Michael Wax, Erik Muttersbach and Chief Operating Officer Dr. Michael Ardelt, Kinexon co-founders Dr. Alexander Hüttenbrink and Dr. Oliver Trinchera, and Bastian Nominacher, Co-CEO and Co-Founder of Celonis.

Orbem’s pioneering product, driven by AI-powered MRI technology, has the capability to scan a wide range of biological samples, encompassing food products like eggs and nuts, various plant species, construction materials such as timber, and even the human body. This innovative solution eliminates the need for human intervention in MRI imaging, as the AI system seamlessly takes on roles traditionally performed by technicians and radiologists. As a result, MRI procedures become several hundred times more sustainable and faster, making them viable in a wide range of previously untapped markets.

Orbem Genus — the most sustainable and efficient option for in-ovo sexing

The Series A round comes on the heels of the successful launch of Orbem Genus Focus for in-ovo sexing, a groundbreaking product that enables hatcheries to determine the sex of an egg in a completely contactless and non-invasive manner, delivering results in just one second per egg. This makes Genus the most sustainable and efficient option on the market. Orbem’s solution eliminates the controversial practice of male chick culling, ensuring compliance with the latest regulations in Germany and France. Convincing leading producers in the poultry industry, Orbem has reached profitability, and already scanned more than 21 million eggs.

Tackling the world’s biggest challenges with AI-powered MRI technology

“Our mission is to unleash AI-powered imaging for everything and everyone. We believe this is the best way to carry out our core purpose of shedding light on the world’s toughest challenges. With 30 million EUR in funding, we will have the utmost flexibility to realize our vision of deploying AI-powered imaging to sustainably address global food security, accelerate the transition to a green economy, and transform disease detection”, says Dr. Pedro Gómez, co-founder and CEO of Orbem.

Orbem’s accessible AI innovation for scanning biological materials is poised to disrupt multiple industries, including agriculture, construction, and healthcare. In agriculture, Orbem’s non-invasive technology will empower farmers to breed resource-efficient, climate-resilient crops while enhancing food chain security through AI-powered MRI. In the construction sector, their technology will ensure structural integrity in biodegradable materials, thereby accelerating the green economy. Orbem’s rapid and sustainable AI-powered MRI solutions will also revolutionize healthcare testing, making imaging accessible to everyone, and empowering people around the globe to routinely monitor their health and prevent the spread of disease.

“The era of digitization, groundbreaking technological innovation, and the AI revolution present a golden opportunity for companies to solve real-world challenges and establish solid independent businesses. Orbem has harnessed AI to industrialize MRI technology, unlocking the potential to revolutionize food production, expedite the transition toward a sustainable economy, and enhance disease detection. It is a great pleasure joining this amazing crew on a journey to a better world.”, says Gil Goren, General Partner at 83North.
